I had the fortune to be able to see R. Crumb’s original drawings for the Book of Genesis at the Portland Art Museum this weekend. Suffice it to say that if I wasn’t already in awe of his work, I certainly am now. 50+ chapters, hundred of drawings, and only a few spots of white-out. Color me dumbfounded.

And I snapped this picture with my camera… it’s what any piece of paper ends up looking like when it’s left out by my computer too long.

As part of an ongoing freelance project, I’ve been drawing lots of beasties lately. I particularly enjoyed the deer because I find their angles graceful and visually satisfying. This is a wandering journey through my sketchbook and how one symbol got under my skin.

A madrone tree I found on Elk Rock Island on the Willamette River.

First draft of a painting for my aunt of her dear, recently-departed kitteh, Samba Anna.

An antique fruit crate I found in my dad’s woodworking shop.

5 minute self-portrait.
